'What happens to domain client computers when all Domain Controllers vanish from the network?

If I build a Domain Controller and add all my computers to it, what would happen if I lost my DC?
Would I still be able to login to my computers if they cannot reach the DC during login? (Assume all computers have been logged into the Domain at least once and had all domain Policies downloaded and installed when they were added to the Domain).

I want to implement a DC but am concerned about the ramifications if things go awry with the DC.

I want to use an Open Source DC. What would be a good/robust option?
