'What does flex-grow refer to in a flex-container with column axes?

When we change the value of flex-direction: column; the flex-basis refers to the height. I would like to know, do the flex-grow and flex-shrink also refer to the height of the flex-elements then?

If Yes:-

  1. If they refer to height then why do the flex items occupy the entire width of the flex container and adjust their width accordingly as the flex container's width is changed?

If No:- 2) Then what determines the height of the container when they have flex-basis: auto; and the height isn't mentioned?
