'Error running JUNIT test based on different texture signature

I'm writing some tests to check that some textures are the same when loading. I am unsure what is wrong, as i'm getting an error I have never seen before. There might be some error in my assertEquals statement, but I myself can't see it.

I have not written many JUnit tests so far, so there might just be that i'm making it too simple and that I need to add more code.

org.opentest4j.AssertionFailedError: expected: com.badlogic.gdx.graphics.Texture@415b0b49<spider.png> but was: com.badlogic.gdx.graphics.Texture@6d5620ce<spider.png>
Expected :spider.png
Actual   :spider.png

Solution 1:[1]

The assertEquals method checks whether two objects are equal using the Object.equals method. This method is often overwritten in a class to check whether two instances of the class are equal, but if it's not overwritten, this method will just check whether the objects are the same instance.

Since the libgdx class Texture doesn't overwrite the equals method your test asserts that both objects are the same instance, but not that they contain the same pixel data.

A solution would be to implement a new method areTexturesEqual(Texture t1, Texture t2) that checks whether the textures are equal:

@Test
public void test_texturesEqual() {
  // replace assertEquals(new Texture("file_name.png"), yourObject); with the following line
  assertTrue(areTexturesEqual(new Texture("file_name.png"), yourObject));
}

private boolean areTexturesEqual(Texture t1, Texture t2) {
  //TODO check the pixel data, or whatever you need to check to consider two textures 'equal'
}
