'What causes Feathers/node/express from slowing down?

We started using Feathers for our API about 6 months ago, and when we had just a few services defined, the service was really fast. Over time we've added more and more services, and now the API is getting quite slow, and I've had to increase the capacity of our API servers. And by the way, the slowness is not related to load -- our staging server, which gets very few requests, is also very slow.

So, my general question is: what causes Feathers (or express or Node) to slow down just by defining more services? Is Feathers loading a lot of state into memory? Any advice on how to diagnose this and preferably improve the performance?
