'Using Lit in Visual Studio Code, ReferenceError: window is not defined

I'm attempting to get lit working in Visual Studio Code but keep running into this error:

The error appears both when running node ./app.js from git bash, and when running the debugger in VS Code. I'm also using the exact code from https://lit.dev/playground/ (the JS versions, not TS versions). I created my project folder and used node.js to install lit inside it with npm i lit as instructed on their website, then created my html and js files using VS Code. For completion's sake here is my html:

the window variable is defined in C:\Users\C2Ran\.vscode\extensions\ms-vscode.vscode-typescript-next-4.7.20220311\node_modules\typescript\lib\lib.dom.d.ts as follows:

for some reason css-tag.js isn't able to grab this definition (despite the fact that I can right-click 'window' in css-tag.js itself and click 'Go to definition', leading me there).

Does anyone know a good workaround for this?
