'multithreaded codecs in ffmpeg

I'm using vp9 to encode a video file and multithreading is capped at 16 threads, does anyone know how to increase this limit? Are other codecs like AV1 or H.265 better at multithreading and if yes, is there a cost (in terms of quality) attached to it? Any tips/help is appreciated.
