'How does NERDTree NeoVim

I am just getting started with NeoVim and I noticed that NERDTree was the best way to 'copy' VS Code's file explorer. But what does it do when you open a new file? Does it replace the old one on the current screen or does it open it in a 'special way' that the previous file you were working on does not get closed?
