GCP Dashboard Template Variables - Not updating widgets as expected

Question

I created a dashboard in GCP using custom metrics and I'm trying to use template variables to update a scorecard widget data based on the template variable, however it's not behaving as I would expect. It seems to work only when in edit mode.

For example, my dashboard has the Campaign Stages scorecard widgets (queued, preparing send etc). If I go into edit mode and update the default values of the AccountID and CampaignID template variables, you can see the scorecard values update. However, when I close the dashboard editor and then update the template variables again using the filter at the top, nothing happens. I've made sure that the template variables are being applied to all of my charts.
