'Different Gaussian filter?
Much has been written about the Gaussian filter here. However, I have a question about the smoothed density of points according the equation which I found
\rho = \sum_{i} \exp{(-(b_{i}-b)^{2})/2\sigma_{b}^{2})},
which is basically the Gaussian smoothing filter. My question is, what is the b parameter in denominator (mean?)? It is necessary? Because i work only with the form (-b_{i}^{2})/2\sigma_{b}^{2}), which is basically the same. Therefore, I do not understand the meaning of this parameter. What are the possible advantages of this procedure?
