'Choose between Ethernet/IP and Modbs TCP

I'm working on a tcp server and I would like to use an industrial protocol to develop the Application layers. I hesitate between Modbus TCP and Ethernet/IP and would like to know what kind of parameters should I take into account to make my choice. I want to do an explicit messaging connection between a server and a client for the moment and implement more devices in the future.
